Start Screen Redesign
I collaborated with the product team android developers to redesign EPIX's start screen for mobile. EPIX's start-up screen is one the first among the premium network providers to feature compelling video content, and most importantly it in the future will increase EPIX's acquisition of subscribers and valuable data.

Defining the Problem

The Problem Fermented

The previous EPIX start-up screen was static and featured show art. Users had the option to subscribe, log in, or browse. Currently, EPIX was missing out on the opportunity to showcase its original content or feature monthly movies to entice new users to subscribe to a trial.

Design Goals
How might we create a more personalized and engaging start screen on EPIX to help users discover relevant content easily and increase overall user retention?
Enhance User Engagement
Increase the average time users spend on the start-up screen within the first three months.
Increase Subscription Conversions
Increase the conversion rate from the start-up screen to the subscription.
Improve User Experience
Achieve a user satisfaction score of 4.5 out of 5 in post-interaction surveys.
Accessibility
Ensure 100% compliance with WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards.
Competitive Analysis
Researched EPIX's competitor's start screens and how they were used across all platforms. After researching found only one other brand had some sort of video start screen. We brainstormed then how we could make ours unique as well as stand out.
Sketches
To kick off the design process, quick sketches helped me get ideas on paper to establish which elements were necessary for each screen. Collaborating with design teammates we did crazy eights sketches as well and experimented with some ideas of how the start screen would operate and look. We tried a few different aspect ratios for the video, as well as button location and volume control.
Impact Matrix
We then created an impact matrix and rated how each design would be least impactful and most impact as well easiest to develop in a quick amount of time. We decided on idea 3 because of the simplistic design and with a carousel would be able to scroll through different trailers and clips of the featured tv show or film. For accessibility, the user would also be able to mute and unmute the video.
Wireframes
Our main concept was to create an experience that would make it easy to switch out promotional videos for tv series or movies on the start-up screen for marketing. We wanted the option for the user to be able to mute the video at all times and in the future be able to share the content on social media or through text and email. This would ideally create future subscribers and improve user interaction with EPIX apps.

Final
This project was not only about improving the discoverability of the TV series and overall theme, but it made the apps seamless. It is designed to see the information as the user needs it and watch as they please, and at the same time, the clean layout makes it easy to use on the go.
Outcome
fter the original hackathon MVP product, I worked with our product manager and mobile developers to implement and ship this new feature for the EPIX NOW mobile products. Before launching the feature I worked with a UX researcher to complete usability tests for the home screen regarding interaction and overall response to the redesign. 9 out of the 10 users we tested found the start screen to be an upgraded experience and enticed them to explore the app further.

I had left EPIX before I could see the ultimate end data results of the overall post-launch impact of the new feature. We met the goals of this project by enhancing the design of the start screen for a more premium experience for EPIX NOW.
